Tulle

A half-millimetre sheet of gold pierced by hand into hundreds of minute hexagonal cells, so the metal reads like net lace.

Africa

Slightly lopsided beads of 18k yellow gold, each scored by hand with a burin into thousands of fine lines, strung in graduated rows so the satin surface glows rather than shines.

Venetian needle lace taught Mario Buccellati tulle in the 1920s: a half-millimetre sheet of gold sawn into hundreds of minute hexagonal cells, work that can take a goldsmith close to a month before an engraver finishes it. Africa marks the surface instead of piercing it. Marco Bicego's burin scores each round yellow-gold bead with fine lines until it feels like silk, and the beads are left slightly irregular.
