Parentesi

A bracket-shaped gold link, repeated and locked into necklaces and bracelets like the joints between Roman paving stones.

Elsa Peretti Diamonds by the Yard sprinkle necklaces in 18k yellow gold, bezel-set diamonds spaced along fine chains, hanging against a peach ground with evergreen sprigs.

Elsa Peretti Diamonds by the Yard

Diamonds set flat in thin gold bezels and spaced along a fine chain, so the stones seem scattered on the skin rather than mounted.

A doodle and a pun lie behind these chains. Gianni Bulgari saw a modular link in brackets he was sketching in a meeting, and Parentesi followed in Rome in 1982, its interlocking pieces often read as the joints of travertine paving. Diamonds by the Yard, created by Elsa Peretti soon after she joined Tiffany in 1974, took its title, often credited to Halston, from chain sold by length. Each name is a small joke on its object, a punctuation mark in Rome and a draper's measure in New York.
