Serti sur Vide

A diamond held on a hidden bar so it seems to hover above the finger or the ear, with nothing visible beneath it.

The Tiffany Setting

Six slender prongs lift a round brilliant diamond clear of the band, so the stone, not the mount, carries the ring.

Light was the concern in 1886, when the Tiffany Setting raised a round brilliant on six prongs, the mount pared down and in plain view so light could enter from every side. Repossi's Serti sur Vide, launched in 2014, hides the structure altogether: the stone sits on a concealed bar and seems to float, with nothing beneath it. The name means setting on emptiness, and it reads as a reply, 128 years on, to the problem Tiffany solved.
