Precious Lace

Diamonds set in scalloped gold openwork that reads like antique lace, cut into tutu ruffles, waves and hearts.

Bouton d'or

Van Cleef & Arpels

Bouton d'or

Little discs of gold, each with a stone at its centre, massed in rows and rings like the head of a buttercup.

Fabric lies behind these flowers. Van Cleef & Arpels' Bouton d'or descends from its 1936 Sequins motif, gold discs with a central stone that echoed the sparkle of evening dresses, revived in 2016 as massed buttercup heads. That same year Chopard presented Precious Lace, which takes lace instead of sequins as its textile: scalloped openwork of rose or white gold with diamonds along the curves. The sequin is a solid disc meant to glint, the lace a pierced edge meant to frame.
