Serrure

A bangle of springy gold wire, one end flattened by a hammer stroke into a clasp shaped like a lock.

Tiffany Lock

A bangle drawn as the elongated shackle of a padlock, whose clasp swivels and clicks shut like the lock it imitates.

Serrure is French for lock, so these two share a name as well as a motif. Jean Dinh Van's version, of 1975, is spare: a bangle of springy gold wire whose flattened end only recalls a lock, with no mechanism inside. Tiffany Lock, from 2022, takes the padlock literally, stretching its shackle into the body of the bangle and fitting a clasp that swivels and clicks. Almost half a century apart, Paris suggests the lock and New York builds one.
