Giardino

A four-petalled flower in openwork gold with a lace edge, set with one stone at its heart, taken from the gardens of Isola Madre on Lake Maggiore.

Bouton d'or

Van Cleef & Arpels

Bouton d'or

Little discs of gold, each with a stone at its centre, massed in rows and rings like the head of a buttercup.

Bouton d'or works by accumulation: polished yellow-gold discs, each holding a stone, crowd together into rows and rings, a 1936 Van Cleef & Arpels motif revived in 2016. Giardino works by isolation. Laure-Isabelle Mellerio's four-petalled flower is cut in openwork with a lace edge and a single coloured stone at its heart, and it shrinks to a Mini charm or grows into a medal. Weight and sequin brightness belong to the buttercup, and the island flower stays fine and lacy.
