Crowded yellow-gold discs, each with a stone at its centre, fill Bouton d'or in rows and rings that recall the sequins of 1930s evening dresses; Van Cleef & Arpels revived the 1936 motif in 2016. Les Pétales Place Vendôme heads toward lightness instead: a few cupped petals of pavé diamonds drift around a round pearl. Where the Paris piece fills every gap with yellow gold, Mikimoto leaves air around its pearl.
