Quatre

Four bands, each carrying one archive motif (grosgrain ribbing, a line of diamonds, Clou de Paris facets, a double gadroon) pressed together into a single ring.

Africa

Slightly lopsided beads of 18k yellow gold, each scored by hand with a burin into thousands of fine lines, strung in graduated rows so the satin surface glows rather than shines.

Texture is the subject of both. Quatre, which Solange Azagury-Partridge assembled for Boucheron in 2004, stacks four archive patterns into one ring, grosgrain ribbing, a row of diamonds, Clou de Paris pyramids and a double gadroon, pressed together without solder. Africa uses a single texture throughout: Marco Bicego's burin scores each slightly irregular gold bead with thousands of fine lines, so the yellow gold takes on a soft satin glow.
