LOVE or The Cable Collection
Cartier · David Yurman
LOVE
A rigid oval of gold closed by two working screws, so the bracelet goes on with a screwdriver and stays on.
The Cable Collection
Strands of metal twisted into a helix and bent into an open cuff, its two ends capped with gold and a coloured stone.
New York produced both, thirteen years apart, each making an industrial form precious. Aldo Cipullo's LOVE of 1969 borrowed the screw: two of them close a rigid gold oval, screwdriver included. David Yurman, a sculptor trained in direct welding, borrowed the cable in 1982, twisting strands of metal into a helix and bending it into an open cuff capped with stones, a form he links to ancient torques at the Met. Cipullo's oval screws shut, and Yurman's cuff slips on through its open side.
